SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Chris Hines scored 19 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer with 27 seconds left, and Utah defeated the Stanford 58-57 on Saturday to halt an eight-game losing streak. The win provided a little salvation for the Utes (6-22, 3-13 Pac 12), who closed out the home portion of their inaugural Pac-12 campaign with a 6-9 record — their first losing mark at home in 38 years. The game went down to the wire like the first meeting, which Stanford won 68-65 in Palo Alto, Calif. Freshman Chasson Randle had a chance to win it for Stanford but missed a long 3-pointer at the buzzer. Randle led Stanford (19-10, 9-8) with 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Jason Washburn added 17 points for the Utes, who won the game at the free throw line by making 17 of 21 attempts. Dijon Farr added 12 points and six rebounds for Utah, while Owens and Anthony Brown had 11 apiece for the Cardinal. Hines, who scored a career-high 21 points in the first meeting, kept the Utes close early with a pair of 3-pointers. Utah held Stanford scoreless the first 5 1/2 minutes of the second half and took a 38-33 lead on baskets by Washburn and Farr. Stanford came back and led 56-55 on Dwight Powell's putback with 40 seconds left, only to see Hines hit another 3. Utah led 34-33 at halftime after trailing by as many as nine points. Hines and Jason Washburn did most of the damage. Hines kept the Utes close early with a pair of 3-pointers. His third 3-pointer tied the score at 27 with 4:29 left in the half, and Dijon Farr sank three free throws for a 30-27 Utah lead. Washburn played much stronger than he did in Thursday's loss to conference-leader California. He scored Utah's first six points Saturday, and followed a first-half steal with a 3-pointer during the Utes' 8-0 run. In the first half Washburn had 11 points, three blocks, a steal and two rebounds. Stanford was held without a field goal for more than six minutes late in the first half. Randle finally broke the drought with a jumper with 2:09 remaining and Owens' tip-in gave Stanford a brief 33-32 lead until Javon Dawson's free throws put Utah back on top entering the break. Stanford out-shot and out-rebounded Utah in the first half and held an 18-6 advantage on points in the paint. But Utah's aggressive style got players to the free-throw line often. Unlike in the Jan. 12 meeting when the Utes made just one of nine free throws, they made 14 of 16 in the first half alone Saturday.
