BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Virginia Tech men's basketball coach James Johnson has hired his staff. The school says veteran head coach and lead assistant Kurt Kanaskie and Mark Byington and Ramon Williams, both with deep Virginia roots, will work with the first-time head coach. Johnson was hired May 1 to replace Seth Greenberg. Kanaskie was the associate head coach at Navy last season and held the same position at Penn State for two years. He also was a head coach at Drake and Indiana, Pa., for 15 years. Byington was Bobby Cremins' top assistant at College of Charleston for the last six years. He graduated from Salem (Va.) High School and also spent three seasons on staff at Virginia. Williams, a Roanoke native, has been an assistant for 10 years since graduating from VMI.
