ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) — A Winthrop graduate and her husband are endowing a scholarship with the athletic department to support the men's basketball program. Susan Anfin is a former assistant athletic director for compliance and student services at Winthrop and serves on the board of the school's booster group, the Eagle Club. She and husband Jim Doyle say their donation will support the Eagles' basketball team with first preference given to a player who showed "exemplary" grade-point average improvement. The school says the couple's gift honors the tradition of strong student-athlete achievement in academics. The fall 2011 semester cumulative GPA average of 3.11 for all student-athletes is the highest since such records have been kept. Anfin said the couple enjoy the family atmosphere at Winthrop games.
