The Montana Grizzlies might have a wild card up their sleeves when they face Wisconsin. One of coach Wayne Tinkle's assistants is former Badgers player Freddie Owens.
So, the Grizzles know all about the Badgers.
Badgers coach Bo Ryan will be glad to see his former player on the Grizzlies bench Thursday.
Actually, he sees him all the time because he has a photo in his house from the 2003 NCAA tournament when Owens hit the game-winning 3-pointer against Tulsa in Spokane, Wash., to cap a rally from 13 down with 3:36 to go and send the Badgers to the round of 16.
"Every time I go to work out in this room I have in my house, the picture of him making the shot and running to the other end of the court with his hands up, I have to look at that expression every time I go work out," Ryan said. "So I see Freddie five times a week.
"He's bald now. I told him one time he had a little different type of haircut, and he had made a few mistakes. I actually did tell him this: 'Freddie, I think that's a little too tight, and I think it's affecting the way you're thinking.' Freddie had a different cut the next day and played well in the next game."
