WASHINGTON (AP) — Daniel Munoz scored 11 points and contributed four assists to lead American University to a 57-40 victory over Army in their Patriot League quarterfinal Wednesday night. The third-seeded Eagles (20-10) held the sixth-seeded Black Knights (12-18) to 11 first-half points on their way to setting up a semifinal at Lehigh Saturday. The second-seeded Mountain Hawks split the regular-season series with American, with each team winning at home. Ella Ellis recorded his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds as Army's season came to a close. The Eagles held the Black Knights to just 26.3-percent shooting (15 of 57), their worst offensive effort of the year. Army shot 16.7 percent (4 of 24) during a first half when American built a 23-11 lead, while forcing Army into 10 first-half turnovers. After a close early contest, American went on an 18-2 run that stretched across halftime. Munoz sparked the run with a 3-pointer, Charles Hinkle sank a step-back jumper with 14 seconds left to stretch the lead to 12 at halftime, and it was 29-11 after John Schoof's layup and a pair of foul shots early in the second. Army closed to within 11 in the second half after Ellis and Chris Hemling's back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 41-30. But the Black Knights would get no closer, and narrowly avoided being held to fewer than 40 points for the first time since a 58-36 loss to American on Feb. 19, 2009. Hinkle scored nine points and Blake Jolivette added eight for American, which secured its fourth 20-win season in five years. Munoz also sank a pair of late free throws to help American avoid finishing without a double-digit scorer for the first time since a loss to Georgetown in December of 2008. Lafayette will travel to Bucknell in Saturday's other semifinal.
