AMHERST, Mass. (AP) — Freshman T.J. Weeks made 4 of 6 3-pointers and scored 23 points to lead UMass to a 79-64 season-opening win over UMass Lowell 79-64 on Tuesday night.

Carl Pierre had 13 points for UMass. Samba Diallo added 12 points and seven rebounds. Sean East II had 11 points and six assists for the home team.

The Minutemen finished 9 of 27 behind the arc. They led 36-33 at the half and pulled away by shooting 58% in the second half while the River Hawks shot just 31%.
